Table Topics
-
These are 1-2 minute impromptu speeches. There are usually 4-6 of these per meeting. This part of the meeting is usually scariest for new members, but it is the place where the most immediate growth is experienced. We have a saying in our club that "Toastmasters is just practice." It is the most supportive, friendly environment where you can grow as a speaker.
-
Prepared Speeches
-
These speeches are usually 5-7 minutes but can be longer. They are prepared in advance and give you an opportunity to hone your skills. Each of your first 10 speeches focuses on a different aspect of speaking so that you can refine you style and presence.
-
Evaluations of Prepared Speeches
-
One of the most valuable parts of giving a prepared speech is having that speech evaluated by an experienced Toastmaster. These evaluations are 2-3 minutes and give us all an opportunity to learn from the positive and the negative of your speech. You will recieve praise for those elements of your speaking where you hit a home run, and constructive critisism in the areas that need improvement. Being an evaluator also gives you an opportunity to listen carefully and provide feedback in a contructive and possitive way. This is a skill that is invaluable in most job environments.
